Fresco Painting - Apprentices in the Atelier
Painting a Fresco – 15th and 16th Century
“Of all the techniques a painter can choose, the most skilled and beautiful is that of painting a wall in one single day - which, in the other techniques, can be corrected through many days of touching up…”
This is how Giorgio Vasari describes this artistic technique, known and carried out since ancient times. The fresco (affresco in Italian) technique is considered one of the most sophisticated and difficult as its execution leaves no room for a change of mind and calls for perfect knowledge of the materials and pigments used. Palazzo Vecchio contains a large number of fresco paintings by Giorgio Vasari himself, as well as by other famous artists such as Francesco Salviati, Domenico Ghirlandaio, and Agnolo Bronzino.
Apprentices in the Atelier
Become an apprentice for an afternoon - create your own small fresco, and learn hands-on about this ancient and challenging technique! The workshop leader will illustrate the characteristics of the fresco techniques, demonstrate them in the atelier, and lead you through the thrilling experience of creating your own small work of art.
Back in Vasari's days, the preparatory phases required teamwork carried by all the apprentices of the atelier, precisely following a series of phases, from grinding and tempering the colors, to preparing the surface, and plastering the table. Learn how to create the design, prepare the instruments and materials, and apply the colors. Each visitor prepares the support on which to paint, and applies the tonachino, the thin layer of plaster on which to spread the colors on top of a natural terracotta base.
After you have acquired the secrets of fresco painting, you'll retrace the still visible signs of the variety of techniques used by different artists inside the Monumental Quarters of the Palazzo Vecchio. See the frescoes with new eyes, now that you have experienced what it takes to create an affresco yourself!
